Dr. Lea Müller-Funk, principal investigator
Lea Müller-Funk is Assistant Professor at the Department of Migration and Globalisation at the University for Continuing Education Krems (Danube University Krems). She previously worked at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford, the Department of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam and the Institute of Middle East Studies at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies.
Lea holds a joint PhD degree in Comparative Politics and Arabic Studies from Sciences Po Paris and Vienna University. Her work focuses on migration processes and immobility in the context of violent conflict, diaspora politics and political participation and forced migration governance with a geographical focus on the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.
She has led and been involved in various research projects on displacement (Marie Curie: SYRMAGINE (Syrian Imaginations of Europe, 2017-2019), Horizon2020: MAGYC (Migration Governance and Asylum Crises, 2019-2021), FWF: SYREALITY (Syrian Imaginations of Europe meet Reality, 2022-2027), ERC: RESTATE (Refugees’ Political Participation and State-(Re)Making in Displacement, 2025-2030). Her latest work has been published in Migration Politics, the International Migration Review, the Journal of Refugee Studies, and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Dr Ahmad Wali Ahmad Yar, postdoctoral researcher
Dr. Ahmad Wali Ahmad Yar is a postdoctoral researcher at the University for Continuing Education Krems, where he is affiliated with the Department of Migration and Globalisation. As part of his role, he contributes to the SYREALITY and RESTATE projects, engaging in research on forced migration, imaginaries of Europe, political participation, and the governance of mobility. His work brings together empirical research, critical policy analysis, and close attention to lived experiences, with a particular focus on refugees, diasporas, and questions of agency, representation, and power. He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Brussels Institute for Social and Population Studies (BRISPO) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where his research centred on international migration statistics, EU migration policies, regularisation mechanisms, and the use of new and digital data sources in migration research. Before that, he was a researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, contributing to policy oriented work on migration, integration, and social inclusion at both European and local levels. He holds a PhD in Sociology from VUB, a master’s degree in Political Science from Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), and a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Al Farabi Kazakh National University.
Alongside his academic career, Dr. Ahmad Yar plays a central role in refugee led and diaspora based civil society initiatives in Europe. He is the President of the Umbrella Refugee Committee (URC), a platform that brings together refugee communities and grassroots initiatives to promote participation, mutual support, and inclusive forms of integration grounded in lived experience. He is also the Secretary General of the Network of Afghanistan Diaspora Organisations in Europe (NADOE), which works to strengthen cooperation among diaspora organisations, amplify collective voices, and foster transnational engagement based on solidarity, accountability, and self representation.
These roles are not separate from his academic work but deeply intertwined with it. His research is informed by a commitment to participatory knowledge production and by the conviction that migrants and refugees should be recognised not only as research subjects or policy targets, but as political, social, and epistemic actors in their own right. Being originally from Afghanistan, his work is also shaped by a long standing interest in the history and current affairs of South and Central Asia. Through his combined academic and civil society engagement, Dr. Ahmad Yar seeks to build bridges between research, policy, and community practice, while contributing to more just and inclusive approaches to migration governance in Europe and beyond.

إلى جانب مسيرته الأكاديمية، يضطلع الدكتور أحمد ولي أحمد يار بدور محوري في مبادرات المجتمع المدني التي يقودها اللاجئون والمهاجرون في أوروبا٬ فهو رئيس لجنة اللاجئين الشاملة، وهي منصة تجمع مجتمعات اللاجئين والمبادرات القاعدية من أجل تعزيز المشاركة والدعم المتبادل، وأشكال اندماج شاملة قائمة على التجربة المعاشة٬ كما يشغل منصب الأمين العام لشبكة منظمات الشتات الأفغاني في أوروبا، التي تعمل على تعزيز التعاون بين منظمات الشتات، والأصوات الجماعية٬ والانخراط العابر للحدود على أساس التضامن والمساءلة والتمثيل الذاتي
ولا تنفصل هذه الأدوار عن عمله الأكاديمي، بل تتداخل معه بعمق٬ إذ يستند بحثه إلى التزام بإنتاج معرفة تشاركية، وإلى قناعة مفادها أن المهاجرين واللاجئين ينبغي الاعتراف بهم ليس فقط كموضوعات للبحث أو أهداف للسياسات، بل كفاعلين سياسيين واجتماعيين ومعرفيين قائمين بذاتهم. وبحكم كونه منحدرا أصلا من أفغانستان، يتشكل عمله أيضا باهتمام طويل الأمد بتاريخ جنوب ووسط آسيا وشؤونها الراهنة. ومن خلال الجمع بين الانخراط الأكاديمي والمدني، يسعى الدكتور أحمد ولي أحمد يار إلى بناء جسور بين البحث والسياسات والممارسة المجتمعية، والمساهمة في مقاربات أكثر عدالة وشمولا لحوكمة الهجرة في أوروبا وخارجها
Saja Abusulttan, research assistant
Saja Abusulttan joined the SYREALITY research project as a research assistant to support the qualitative fieldwork in Amsterdam. Saja is also a researcher at the Erasmus MC, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, where she is conducting research within the Veni project “Organs as a Gateway to Europe” focusing on the vulnerabilities of refugees-asylum-seekers/undocumented migrants. Saja holds a Master in Public Health from the University of Sheffield, UK and graduated with a Master of Global Health from the University of Maastricht (UM), the Netherlands, where she specialized in Leadership and Organization. Saja’s research focus during her master was on gender, mental health and migration in the Netherlands. She is also a member of Aralez (Pan-Decolonial Network and Grassroots Organisation) and was a member of the Diversity, Decolonization, and Belonging Committee of Global Health at UM. During her studies, she was selected for the PREMIUM Excellence Program at UM where she worked on the Student Service Centre’s Refugee Project: ELPEEDA. Back home, Saja was a social activist and advocate for refugee rights. Her personal background as a refugee in Palestine and then in the Netherlands, motivated her research focus and work on migration contexts.

Weam Ghabash, research assistant
Weam Ghabash is a Syrian human rights defender based in the Netherlands. She has been involved in local and regional feminist NGOs and networks in the MENA region for seven years and is currently pursuing a research master in social sciences at the University of Amsterdam. Weam is passionate about working on research and projects related to women’s rights. In the SYREALITY project, Weam is supporting the development of the interview and survey instruments and involved in data collection.
وئام غباش هي مدافعة سورية عن حقوق الإنسان مقيمة في هولندا. شاركت في المنظمات غير الحكومية والشبكات النسوية المحلية والإقليمية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا لمدة سبع سنوات وتسعى حاليًا للحصول على ماجستير بحثي في العلوم الاجتماعية في جامعة أمستردام. وئام متحمسة للعمل في الأبحاث والمشاريع المتعلقة بحقوق المرأة. في مشروع سيرياليتي، تدعم تطوير دليل المقابلات المعمقة والاستبيان وتشارك في جمع البيانات
Mohammad Kabbani, research assistant
Mohammad Kabbani is a law graduate from Damascus University, based in Athens. Since his decision to stay in Greece, he has been involved in several projects and programmes related to the field of asylum and migration in the context of social work. Currently, Mohammad is working as a psycho-social worker in a mental health and development association in Athens and is looking forward to starting a master program in European asylum and migration law and policies.

Isabelle Karabajakian is a graduate researcher in the field of migration currently based in Vienna, where they are also involved in grassroots initiatives with and for refugees. They hold degrees in political science and public administration and have substantive experience in humanitarian programming and development in the SWANA [MENA] region.

Lina Omran, research assistant
Lina is a researcher based in Germany. She holds an MA in contemporary sociology from Leicester University in the UK and is completing her second master’s in social sciences at Humboldt University. Her research focuses on civil society in conflict areas, migration, and urban sociology. Previously, she managed different programs working with Iraqi, Palestinian, and Syrian refugees, focusing on protection, mental health, and psychosocial support. Lina also worked as a researcher and consultant with various UN agencies and international and national organizations, including GIZ, UNESCO, UNICEF and others.

Karam Yahya, research assistant
Karam Yahya is a researcher based in Berlin. He holds a BA degree from Hashimite University, Jordan, specializing in Literature and Cultural Studies and an MA in Social Sciences from Humboldt University of Berlin. Besides studying, Karam was an active member of the university theatre, which qualified him to play in several international and professional theatre festivals. In 2013, he graduated from Hashimite University and started his work career with ActionAid as a Community Mobilizer at the Zataree refugee camp. Following the same route, Karam worked in different refugee camps in Greek islands like Chios and Samos, Berlin, and in rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea departing from Malta. Karam also contributed to the book: Stealing Time: Migration, Temporalities, and State Violence edited by Monish Bhatia and Victoria Canning, which followed the lived experiences of refugees. Besides that, Karam is a public speaker and was a guest speaker at many conferences and panels with many institutions including the European Students Union, Humanity in Action, and Sheffield University.
